Arts and crafts.

I am not a domestic girl.

I don't cook, I hate to clean, and my idea of a functional home life hinges largely on television shows where girls own multiple $1000 purses, guys have beautifully coiffed hair, and for some reason no one seems to ever work, do laundry, or get pimples.

In college, I switched my major numerous times between Creative Writing, Art (emphasis on mixed media found art collage), Literature, and Photography. Apparently, when you lump all of those multiple half-finished degrees into one, eff around for awhile, make some dubious decisions, and finally get your shit together, you get a career in Cosmetology!

(Who knew?)

(Oh, and you also get an expensive shoe habit and an eerily accurate knowledge of your "good" side when posing for pictures. That part's just gravy.)

So while I am not Susie Homemaker, I am CRAFTY.

Hubs has lamented on many occasions about my ridiculous amount of art supplies squirreled away in our limited storage space. I refuse to get rid of anything, and he only feeds my addiction by organizing everything so well that I don't feel like I need to.

(Oh did I mention that when you study Literature you simultaneously learn how to bullshit your way through any argument by being forced to "discover" subliminal poetry messages? Very useful.)

(I mean, I'm all for hidden meaning and everything but sometimes a tree is just A TREE.)

Admittedly, I might not know how to turn on our fancy vacuum cleaner or, uhm, exactly where we keep the peanut butter, but I can find you 3843 different types of markers in about 4 seconds, and I have enough decorative collage paper to wallpaper our house.

Glue? Got it. Drawing pencils? I'm your girl. Paints? I have pastel AND oil. Contact sheet loop? Sure. Drafting board? Yes. Knitting needles? Multiple sizes. Beads? Every color. Sewing machine? Check. Fabric flowers? Absolutely.

Every once in awhile, I get a hankering to craft. When I was single, I used to do it a lot.

(Wow. That sounds AWFUL. I am a DORK.)

(What I MEANT was, when I was single, I used to go out and party every night and not come home till the sun was up and vodka and cute boys and clubs and money and glamour and intrigue and excitement!)

Now when I pull out my art stuff...I have a pupil.

(Not kidding. It's hysterical.)

If I'm making beaded jewelry, Hubs wants to try. He dubbed himself "The Bead Guru" and made me some bee-you-tee-ful bead & wire hair combs. They were so lovely, I didn't want to wear them because I was afraid I might LOSE them, so I put them in a place of honor in the very, very back of my dresser drawer where I knew they'd be safe.

(And out of my immediate line of sight.)

When I pulled out my sketchbook, Hubs wanted to try his hand at drawing boats. I set him up with an entire set of drawing pencils and my drafting board. He sketched for two days straight and contemplated framing his finished product.

(We're still looking for that PERFECT frame to display his masterpiece.)

After seeing me knitting yesterday, Hubs decided he wanted to learn. We got a handmade blanket as a wedding gift, and he loves it, so he wanted to try and make another. So, today we had a lesson.

HUBS: (coming into the living room with the knitting needles and yarn skein) Okay! I'm ready.

ME: (having a hard time keeping a straight face looking at his big hands awkwardly holding the needles) Okay. Sit next to me and I'll show you how to cast on.

HUBS: We tie knots, right?

(Hubs is an expert at knot-tying. Comes with being a boat guy, I guess.)

ME: Uhm. Kind of.

I have to tell you, watching my big, tall, unshaven, perpetually-grubby-handed husband try to knit while our little sweater-wearing dog sat next to him on the couch was one of the most ENDEARING things I've ever seen.

Even when he got frustrated, threw the needles and yarn across the room, and declared it "f*!@ing ridiculous!"

(Inevitable.)

Next week I think we'll try crochet.

I feel like I could have written this very post! I am also arty and enjoy doing those random things that you speak of. I have oil pastels stuffed here and there and scrapbooking accesories bulging from my desk. And I'm a lit major!

This pretty much cements the fact that my Fiance enjoys helping me too. It's only a matter of time (like when he realises exactly how much crap I have) that he re organises my junk and re starts my crafting crap shopping spree.

Arty people like us are still down right absolutely fabulous right?

I'd like to think so.

Hilarious! You have to take pictures of his craft work to show us. Great blog.

AWESOME! ;) I know another hubby (not mine) who is perpetually inclined to "try" crafts... he made one scarf, framed a couple doodles, and has now settled quite happily into woodworking -- turning, to be exact. Pens, finials, bowls... more pens. HAHA Word to the wise -- NEVER let Hubs find a woodworking magazine. (This is an $$$ hobby!)

Its always funny to see a big mans man trying to do something crafty. I do cross stitch and my hubby can't stop himself and tries to help out and do some for me but soon gets fustrated when he gets it wrong or it takes ages.

Oh Tia, I'm crafty too. Would your Hubs like to come organize it for me? Please, please, please? As a bonus, you and I could go shoe shopping while he works (and shows MY dh how to organize). Germans have awesome shoes, plus I'm like a 2 hour flight from Italy, the mecca of all things shoe related. Now doesn't that sound like fun?

Wow! I'm first! =D
Well I studied literature too so I know how you feel about the second meanings and hiden messages... :|... I mean love it, but it can be tiring...
As for the crafts I'm not your girl there... probably I'd play with Hubbs on the frustrating team... LOL

I can't do arts & crafts in the least although knitting has intrigued me lately.

Not saying I'm going to try it...I'd likely end up with a needle in the eye.

hahah your lucky.. I am also a crafter.. I've been crocheting like a maniac for the past couple of months.. whipped out hats, scarfs, an entire smorgisboard of crochet fruit and vegi play foods, and two afghans.

I asked my hubs the other night if he wanted to learn..and all I got was a scowl. He participates in nothing feminine... Heaven forbid he drop his racecar driver facade and have a little silly fun with me.

Yes he really is a racecar driver... albeit.. retired since we had our daughter.

Although he thinks he's some sort of super human badass... whatevs.

Nice but there is something to be said about too much togetherness. I love books (hence I mock your beloved Kindle) and my husband will buy them and let them gather dust. I just now convinced him to get an ipod. Oh well.

You wouldn't have an easel or paint by numbers would you? Could use more artwork at my house.

Go Hubs!

I did not expect this post to end with him being interested in crafts and knitting! That's actually pretty awesome. Tell him he lost ZERO cool points for being interested in what you can do. Go buy him a Kindle and rad leather messenger bag or something. LOL!

Maxie said...

Yes-- definitely try crochet. It's much easier.

And don't knock finding your good side! It's one of the best things I learned in college-haha.

Oh wow, I am totally an art supply hoarder too. I still have all of my drawing pencils, ink pens, curves, photography supplies and lots of random pieces of art I created that will never be hung.

That is hilarious that hubs wants to get in on the action too!

You have a good good man :-)

This story is deliciously hilarious. Your husband sounds like a person I would like to know. (And watch knit!)

Aartee said...

Ha you had me LOL'ing at my desk...at least he's willing to try my hubs isn't too into the arts and crafts! Although this reminds me when my mom was able to teach three girls and a BOY in my neighborhood to knit and yet I just couldn't grasp it...I blame it on being a lefty!

Maki said...

Oh my, I wish I could have seen you guys knitting together!!

I love arts and crafts - actually I've been painting stuff for my friends. So claming.

Another post to realize how charming you guys are... Have a fabulous day!

Luckily, my husband is just as, if not more, creative than I. We each have our own stash of fun art supplies. :)

so... my pops does arts & crafts and schooled me on glittering christmas ornaments (that he had perfectly cut from wood things...)

he insisted i bring the ornaments home, and like you - i placed them very neatly in the back, back of one of my drawers where they would be safe.

That has got to be the funniest thing I've ever heard! Thats great that your husband likes to take an interest in the stuff you do! I could never imagine my boyfriend knitting...scratch that I could, he'd probably be way better at it than I ever could.

*brookiebaby* said...

It's funny you mention crochet...my husband was the one that taught me! His granny taught him when he was little, and passed his tiny bit of knowledge down to me. :)

Happy crafting!

That sounds priceless. Props to hubs for trying new things.

Tia I so love reading about and your Hubs. We have so much in common its crazy! Except I have no Hubby to blog about. Your writting style is ridiculously funny! I find myself LOL in public places while reading your blog from my Blackberry. You are fierce!

Hilarious post. And I can relate entirely.
One of my very favourite photos of my boyfriend is of him trying to ice some dainty pink cupcakes with tiny shell shapes in concentric circles while wearing his "Mr. Strong" t-shirt.
He did such a good job that I selfishly insisted we eat the ones he decorated ourselves rather than share them with friends.

Cool I'm not the only one who learned hot to knit over the holiday. Now if I could just figure out how I keep picking up stitches I'd be golden!

Hubs sounds like a really lovable combination of a little child and my father (my father's a boat guy who decides anything he can't do is f&^%ing ridiculous). At least he makes an attempt to learn!

autumnesf said...

Wow! A husband that loves you so much he wants to try the things that you like.

Mine used to be like that. (LOL!)

Enjoy every minute of it!

Angie said...

Hahaha! Aww...at least he tries. My Hubby just rolls his eyes at me and all my attempts at being crafty. (I'm getting better, I swear...)

Sassy Britches said...

How cool is Hubs?! That he's interested in your crafts and wants to try it out too! I think he needs to have a special place in your home to showcase (one at a time of course, no need to go overboard) his efforts!

My boyfriend tells me he used to knit.

I often wonder if he's gay...

funny post. I was a theatre major, english major (creative writing) and then an interior designer with a minor in art history. That being said - I have all kinds of huge books floating around and gobs of art supplies everywhere that I too cannot let go!
the picture of your hubby knitting is priceliss! Love it!

SouthernAccent said...

Ha ha - that is so cute that he is doing the craft stuff with you! My hubs would never even attempt. And I have those plastic crates of craft stuff everywhere too and he knows not to ever touch them.

Hillary said...

hilarious! I agree with your hubs - knitting IS ridiculous (but only because I can't freaking learn how to do it, despite many attempts.)

Laura said...

That is hilarious! Hubs reminds me of my own husband who wants to do everything I do haha. So funny!

My ex boyfriend decided he was going to learn how to knit so he could make himself the (Tom Baker) Dr. Who scarf... it was then I realized I needed a new boyfriend, lol. I'm joking, of course. I think its ab fab when men want you to teach them things, and if it doesn't work, at least it provides some amusement :)

The only thing my honey is crafty with is holding a fart in long enough to release it on or around me.

This post made me laugh so much, and I think hubs is adorable!

Plus, I love crafts so I'm jealous of all your stuff!

That's so cute that he wanted to learn how to knit. I've never seen a man knit before!

JenBun said...

I love Hubs, yes I do!

(And crochet is WAY easier than knitting!!)

You didn't even talk about the BEAUTIFUL portrait of YOU that he sketched!! Uh huh. I was there for the unveiling! :P

that's freaking awesome, as silly as it is, its pretty cool that your husband takes such an interest in what you do! lucky lucky girl :)

Too funny. Also because, as a pro decorator (sorry, "Feng Shui Designer"), I thought the entry was about the Art & Crafts movement/decorating style, so laughing out loud as I read it caught me by surprise. I have a cleaning lady who organizes my stuff so I can never find it again (on purpose, I'm sure), but the little pup sporting a knitted sweater is right next to me, too at all times as only non-discriminating admirer. Hubby doesn't do girlie stuff.

Lisa Chelle said...

You forget the essential single girl crafting project... Stamps - you know for making your own Christmas Cards.

I am envious the hubs does all the crafting....

Gigi-Gray said...

Hubs is very um...adventurous. I find it admirable that he would even attempt to craft with you. Have decided I have more affinity for the supplies...the yarns, pretty paper, colored glitter pens-than for any ACTUAL art. I too was an English major with a Theatre emphasis...which qualifies me to act like I see the symbolism in everything..teehee

YoYo said...

I want a crafty Hub Hub! Mine runs for his life as soon as he see's me set foot near my supplies. It as if I instantly start talking in another language, and it scares him. I have tried multiple times to lure him in. Kind of like bribing kids with candy and toys, except he is old enough to take the gummy bears and run for the couch. (sigh)

floreta said...

art supplies are expensive! there's no way you should throw them out.

and so cute that hubs is willing to try things you do! VERY endearing indeed.

So he's not going to make me a little hat after all?

Katherine said...

I'm also very artsy/crafty, more than I would ever like to admit. But the boxes of art supplies in the hall closet speak against me. And as for getting the husband in touch with his creative side. Still hasn't happened. I suggest we paint together. He laughes. The magnetic poetry kit? I'm the only who has ever touched it. Scrapbooking? The perfect excuse for him to watch TV without interruption.

I would also love to see pics of Hubs knitting, and his, um, masterpieces.

I consider myself to be a domestic guru! LOL! I cook, clean and take care of the wife and 3 dogs and nothing is ever out of place.. but you ask me to sew anything or craft anything I will smack you with a frying pan! lol So now I know who to send my 'crafty' projects to! lol

Is that sexist?

I haven't picked it up ever since haha...
