My magic.

When I was a little girl, my friend and I would play make-believe. I'm not exactly sure what the premise of the game was, but every day after school, we would convene by this tree in the school yard, and play.

We each had little trinkets that changed daily, and those were our "magic." Sometimes my magic was a cute pencil eraser, sometimes it was a Barbie shoe; sometimes it was even the sparkly brush that I used to comb My Little Ponies' hair. It didn't really matter. It was all magical to us.

In order to make things happen, we just pointed our magic into the air (or at the specific object, if applicable) and made a little bell-type noise. And that was it, it was done.

I've often thought about those days, and what I would use my magic for now, to create my perfect world. If such a thing exists.

In a perfect world...

...both of my feet would be exactly the same size, that way my kick-ass cork wedges wouldn't always slide off my right heel.

...all L.A. freeways would have a shoulder, because I always need to have a plan in case of disaster. (Seriously, why don't they? HATE.)

...we would all vote NO on Prop 8. Marriage should be for EVERYONE.

...the cats and the dog would never fight or chase each other. And they would learn how to make me a sandwich. Or a steak. You know, to earn their keep.

...there would be no such thing as disease. (Feel your boobs! Go Pink for October!)

...Dylan would come back to 90210.

...Hubs would stop snoring. And let me drive.

...global warming would be abstract, not reality.

...you'd never have to go to the DMV again.

...we would all just get along.

...Ellen would have me on her show to promote my website and a big publishing house would offer me a book deal to turn my blog into a book.

...my cute-butt jeans would fit again. And potentially be too big.

...Loubous would be free. And more comfortable than Uggs.

...no, seriously, WE WOULD ALL JUST GET ALONG.

This is just a partial list. I could go on. I know that there is no such thing as "perfect." Life is fluid and complicated, and times are a-changin'.

Making this list made me feel small, and insignificant. But I know that's not reality, because although I am just one person, at least part of my list reflects the ideals of many. We know what needs to change, whether it's within our own life-bubble, or something that affects the whole world.

I'm willing to put my "perfect world" list out there. I don't play make-believe anymore. I put it in writing for everyone to see, because that makes it real.

This blog is my NEW "magic." I'm pointing it at what I want, and ringing the bell.

I live in South Africa, one of the most HIV/AIDS infected countries in the world. On my magic list I would put a cure for AIDS, regulations for pharmacutical companies...

Oh and to finally find a swim suit that looked as sexy as my fav black stilletos. :)

Just wanted to say I really enjoy your blog, and when you are published I am so buying your book.

Hmmmm... on my list I'd put No Racism, no war, no child abuse.... Man, writing my own list could severely depress me. It's a sick, sad world.

Totally agree with the LA freeways thing! That's all I think about while I'm stuck in traffic on the 5 and I'm already running on fumes.

While I'm not in California, I have NO idea why someone would not vote NO to prop 8. Who are we to deny someone from marrying who they love? Thanks for another great post and for supporting the gay and lesbian community. If only everyone was open minded...

If everyone could just get along, my life as a teacher would be a breeze. The hardest part of my job is ensuring that some don't get picked on and others aren't bullying others. Every class period of every day has embedded lessons in conflict resolution. ...Oh, and I'm supposed to be teaching science.

I love the attitude that you can still have magic, or even use your blog for it. There's more you can do than you probably realize.

Oh I hear you girl!
Most of my heels were meant for uber-rich girls who can totter from the limo to the fancy restaurant, back out to the limo again *chuckle*
Not for wannabe yummy-mummies who have school runs, and household duties to contend with. Sigh!

Good blog entry. Loved it.

Wait, I'm confused. Since the "NO to Proposition 8" link links to a "let us marry" website, does that mean that you want everyone to vote no to a ban on gay marriage, or to something that allows gay marriage?

And if it's the latter, no offense, but it doesn't make sense to me that you would say something like that would happen in your perfect world, and then go on to say that you wish everyone would just get along. (If I'm interpreting your viewpoint wrongly, please forgive me.)

Tia said...

EDITORS NOTE: I've changed the phrase pertaining to Prop 8, in an effort to be more clear. Sorry for any confusion.

Oh, Dylan. My teenage heart goes pitter patter.

I make my husband keep his sideburns unfashionably long because of my teenage crush on Dylan. My husband knows this, but I don't think he thinks less of me because of it!

I love your blog. I have been reading it for the past week or so. I like how witty, blunt, and fresh you are. Just like you have said yourself, you keep it "real" and I think that is one of the main reasons we are all so intrigued by your blog. You say all the details and don't try to sugar coat or say something fancy and intelligent. You are just.... you. :) How refreshing.

I loved your blog about magic though. Crazy timing, because me and my cousin bought this book of spells the other day and were laughing about how crazy it would be if you really could cast a spell. This little book had a spell for every situation you could possibly think of. it reminds me of one of my favorite movies... Hocus Pocus.

Hope you have a great day! :)

"...we would all vote NO on Prop 8. Marriage should be for EVERYONE."

Personally, I disagree with this. On a bigger level, my disagreement comes with the fact that if your "magic" really could make this happen, you would be taking freewill away. That's a pretty big thing to take away from people.

Having said that, it's part of your freewill to add that to your list, so I'll say that your list is great!

Tia, I think it's great that you're able to talk about some serious issues in a light-hearted way. A sense of humour like yours would sure serve me well! :)

The top thing on my 'perfect world' list would be peace for all beings. All people would be compassionate towards one another and animals: violence would no longer exist.

I stumbled upon your blog last night and am in love with your sarcasm and wit. I, too, long for the days of Dylan and Kelly. Actually, I really long for the days where it is a big Dylan/Kelly/Brenda triangle. I really want to see a massive 90210 bitchfight - you know Donna Martin has it in her.

Adorable ending! I agree with pretty much all of those, especially voting no on Prop 8, on no disease, on no global warming, and, seriously, cats and dogs learning how to cook. That would be AWESOME (and delicious!)

And trust me I'm going to be first in line when your book comes out! Like others have said before me, it's only a matter of time now. Dream big girl!

Much love,

I sometimes watch my kids pretend. It is the coolest thing ever.

BTW I loved My Little Ponies. I had the My Little Pony Nursery. Honestly, my mom kept it for me. That and my Rainbow Bright dolls. Awesome.

jwriter said...

I think the world would be a much better place if we could all just jump into the make believe from time to time. I really enjoyed this because it made me think about my childhood and how I used to pretend. It helped me become creative and it also let me be whomever and whatever I wanted to be. In my world I wasn't bound by the rules and norms of a cynical and depressed society, that had its innocence stolen along time ago, and tries to project its depression on me. No in my world I was free. I hope some of your wish list comes true. Thanks once again Clever Girl Goes Blog.

I love this entry of yours, especially!

Like you, I used to "perform magic" when I was a kid but that was more of an evil act to manipulate my sister to do little things for me. Like getting her to stop annoying me.

I do wish I have some kind of magic too. When I was working in advertising, I wish I had the magic to turn nasty clients into toad! I think being a witch is really cool.

BTW, I also have a kickass cork wedges that slides off my right feet as I try to walk a bit faster! I'm thinking of how to fix this problem. Would love to wear the wedges as often as I can without worrying when it will fly out and hit the pedestrain in front of me!
